What is MyLATimes

MyLATimes is a personalized news page — you can pick and choose the content you like best from latimes.com and other websites and see everything on one page.

While the latimes.com homepage is a great way to stay on top of the latest news, MyLATimes empowers you to read only the topics you care most about. In addition, with a feature called "Editor's Picks from the Web," you can read the news from other great sources recommended by L.A. Times journalists.

Whether you are interested in entertainment, sports, health or news, you can create your page just the way you like it.

Why would I want to use MyLatimes?

There is so much information available on the Web — it can be difficult to get to the information you want. MyLATimes helps you keep up with it all by letting you organize information in a highly personalized way.

MyLATimes.com is ideal for several types users:

You look at the same three to five sections when you visit latimes.com.

You might like to check out the day's sports news, such as the latest Lakers and Dodgers headlines, as well as our sports blogs. Then, you like to read local news. If you've got a few more free minutes, you'll have a look at the business section.

Instead of bouncing around from section to section, you can set up your MyLATimes page with only those sections and blogs. You'll save time by going straight to your favorite content, without getting bogged down by anything else.

You have a very specific interest and you want to build an entire page around that interest.

If you're an entertainment buff, you may want headlines from The Envelope, our website devoted to awards shows, and the Hollywood Bytes blog, as well as headlines from other entertainment sources like TMZ,or Television Without Pity. Visiting the LATimes.com homepage is still part of your routine for getting the news, but in addition, you visit your MyLATimes page for in-depth coverage on your chosen topic.

What is an RSS feed?

RSS is the technology that makes MyLATimes possible. (RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication.) Through our interface, you can view freshly updated content from latimes.com and other websites. The headlines update regularly through a mechanism called a feed or an RSS feed. A personalized news page like MyLATimes consists of feeds of your choosing.

What are "Editors' Picks"? How do I add one to my page?

Some, but not all modules on your page will include Editors' Picks on the lower half of the module. Editors' Picks are other websites selected by L.A. Times editors, reporters or critics who are experts in their fields. These sites are complementary sources of information on the topics you've chosen.

Editors update their picks from time to time to stay current and to introduce you to a variety of new sites. If you really like an Editor's Pick and want to have it appear as its own module, here's how:

  • Click the "edit" link located in the module with the Editors' Pick you would like to add
  • Select "Add related"
  • Check the box for the Editors' Pick
  • Click "I'm Done" button

Why does MyLATimes display headlines from other websites?

The Los Angeles Times highly values one of the defining characteristics of the Web — its ability to guide readers to relevant information from various sources. Within many modules, below the L.A. Times headlines you will see additional headlines under the label "Editors' Picks from the Web" If you like reading L.A. Times coverage of a particular topic, you might be interested in reading more on the same topic from other sources.

We want to make it easy for you to build a page that is useful to you. If you aren't interested in the Editors' Picks, click"Hide." And likewise, click "Show" to see the picks again.

How to Personalize Your Page

Where do I start?

The first thing you'll want to do at MyLATimes is pick the Starting View you like best. Each Starting View is focused on a different interest. Available Starting Views are:

  • General – gives you a little bit of everything.
  • Los Angeles – news that is highly relevant to Southern California.
  • Entertainment – lots of news about the entertainment industry including reviews, celebrities, and award shows.
  • Lifestyle – headlines from House & Garden, Health, Style, Travel and more.
  • Business – Markets, companies in the news, real estate and more.
  • Sports – our popular sports coverage – just more of it.

After you choose a view and click "Done," you can enjoy the page as-is, or personalize it further by rearranging the order of things or by adding more content.

How do I add more content?

Adding more content to your page is simple.

  • Click the "Add Content" link located at the top of the page
  • Browse your options. (in the center column of the page, latimes.com sections are to the left, Editors' Picks from the Web are to the right)
  • To add content, simply check the check box.
  • To remove content, uncheck the check box.
  • Click through the different categories, like entertainment and sports, to see more categories of content.
  • Click the "I'm Done" button.

Content that is added to or removed from your page will be displayed in a thumbnail picture on the right side of the screen under the heading "Your Page." The thumbnail shows what topics and websites you have added to your MyLATimes page.

How do I add headlines from websites I like that are not Editors’ Picks?

With MyLATimes, you can view content from many of your favorite Web sources in one place. "Editors' Picks" will introduce you to websites, but you are free to add others of your choosing as well.

  • Click the "Add Content" link.
  • Click the "Add your Own" button.
  • Enter the RSS feed URL of your choosing and click "I'm Done".

Not sure how? Go to the website of your choosing, and do the following:

PC Users:

  • Look for the standard RSS symbol on your favorite websites. It usually looks like this: RSS or this: RSS
  • Right click on the RSS symbol and choose the "copy link location" option, then paste that link location into the "Enter URL" box on the "Add your Own" page of MyLATimes.
  • Click the "add" button after pasting in the RSS feed, then click "I'm Done" to return to your personalized page.

Mac Users:

  • Look for the standard RSS symbol on your favorite websites. It usually looks like this: RSS or this: RSS
  • Hold down the control key ('ctrl') and at the same time click on the RSS symbol. Choose the "copy link location" option and then paste that link location into the 'Enter URL' box on the "Add your Own" page of MyLATimes.
  • Click the "add" button after pasting in the RSS feed, then click "I'm Done" to return to your personalized page.

Why must I register for latimes.com to use MyLATimes?

In order to use MyLATimes, you must be a registered user. Registering on latimes.com is free and gives you full access to all content on latimes.com. Read our terms of service and privacy policy for more information about registration and your account information.

How do I rearrange my page?

There are numerous ways to organize content on your page.

  • Drag and drop content onto your MyLATimes page:

    Click your mouse on the top of any module, hold it and drag it to the desired spot. The order you select will be remembered the next time you visit MyLATimes. You may be prompted to register if you haven't already.

    As an alternative, you may also click "Edit" in each module and click the move up and move down buttons to reorder modules.

  • Drag and Drop on the "Add Content" page:

    • You may select any module and drag it to the desired spot.
    • When you return to your page by clicking "I'm Done," the modules will display in the order you selected.
  • Drag and Drop on the "Change Layout" page:

    • Click the "Change Layout" link located at the top of your page.
    • There will be a thumbnail picture that shows the modules you currently have on your page and the order in which they appear.
    • You may select any module and drag it to the desired spot.
    • As an alternative, you can click on a module in the diagram and then use the up and down buttons on the screen to rearrange the order.
    • When you return to your page by clicking "I'm Done" the modules will display in the order you selected.

How do I change the number of headlines per module?

By default, latimes.com modules and other website modules will contain up to four headlines. Editors' Picks from the Web will contain up to two headlines for each pick.

To see more headlines, follow these steps:

  • Click the "Change Layout" link located at the top of the page.
  • Under "Customize the Display," select from the drop down menu the number of headlines you would like to see.
  • Click "I'm Done".

Can I hide photos?

Yes. By default, if a photo is associated with the top headline, it will display in the module. You may choose to suppress all photos on your page.

  • Click the "Change Layout" link located at the top of the page.
  • Select "Hide Photos".
  • Click "I'm Done".

Can I hide article headlines that I have already read?

Yes, if you no longer want to see links to articles that you have already read, you may choose to suppress them in all your modules.

  • From MyLatimes.com click the "Change Layout" link located at the top of the page.
  • Check "Hide Read Images".
  • Click "I'm Done" button when you are done.
